DESKTOP PENGUINS (Cont.)

Here is some more information that relates to Desktop
Penguins... Once the "de facto standard office file
formats" are conquered... HEY WAIT A MINUTE! They have
already been overtaken by both StarOffice and OpenOffice!

OpenOffice.org: Serious Suite Alternative
By Jason Brooks

Microsoft Office virtually owns the productivity suite
market and runs upward of $479 per copy—a price-to-ubiquity
ratio that Microsoft Corp. has been able to maintain
through constant feature refinement and careful guarding
of its de facto standard office file formats.
Enter OpenOffice.org 1.0, which became available for
download last week. OpenOffice.org--or OOo, as it has
become known--is a freely available, open-source office
productivity suite that delivers enough functionality and
Office file format compatibility to make it a compelling
replacement for the Microsoft suite and a good option for
Linux and Solaris users.

Red Hat to Drop StarOffice 6
By Peter Galli

Sun Microsystems Inc.'s decision to start charging users
for its upcoming StarOffice 6.0 desktop office productivity
suite is coming at a price: Linux sales and service company
Red Hat Inc. has decided not to use StarOffice 6.0 in any
of its distributions going forward.

Nancy Lee, the group marketing manager for office
productivity at Sun, told eWEEK that the company is working
with a number of Linux vendors to sign up for StarOffice
6.0. "Linux vendors are looking at the mid-tier and
enterprise market, and StarOffice is a good way for them
to get in there," she said.

While she declined to discuss the status of its negotiations
with the major vendors like SuSE and Red Hat, Lee said Linux
users and vendors can also choose to include the
Openoffice.org office productivity suite released this week,
which is free and which shares the same code base as
StarOffice 6.0.
