>What's ECC memory? What are the

Memory that can detect and sometimes repair defects in itself. Single bit
errors in RAM are not uncommon and can be catastrophic. Multi-bit errors become
more common at higher speeds, and as RAM OEM's cut back by canning the QC
department.

>advantages/disadvantages? Is it really useful

No more Sig 11's. Your system doesn't crash. You know when you have a memory
problem verses trying new kernels, new drivers, new boards, pulling SIMM/DIMM
afer SIMM/DIMM trying to figure out what the heck is wrong. It makes you that
much more confident you can start that nine hour process and actually go have a
life while it grinds away. ECC is an investment in your quality of life.
