[KLUG Members] The end of BSWare, Red HatŪ edition?

Nah, this isn't the end of BSware. Redhat doesn't care if people copy
their GPL software, or even if people modify and sell a Linux
distribution created from Redhat. That's as long as the copied or
modified CD is NOT identified as "Redhat" in any shape or form.

To [hopefully] satisfy Redhat's requirements, I have modified the CD web
pages on kalamazoolinux.org and removed all references to Redhat in
regards to BSware. The origin of BSware will have to be our secret from
now on. :-)

For the record, I understand why Redhat is doing this, and I agree with
what they are doing - up to a point.

There are probably other Redhat clone distributions out there which are
not up the quality of Redhat (and BSware :) which tarnish Redhat's good
name with their modified distribution by calling it "Redhat".

And I can only imagine the number of people, some new the GPL world,
that think they are buying official Redhat for a couple bucks and then
contact Redhat for support (and become upset when they don't get any).
Hopefully Redhat can eliminate some of this confusion, and their own
headaches, by enforcing their trademark more strictly.

The only thing I wish is Redhat would allow some reference to them in
the description of the modified distribution or copied CD. Something
like "based on Redhat", "originally Redhat", "modified Redhat", "copied
Redhat", "downloaded from Redhat", "Redhat like", ... to better
describe what's on the CD.

Maybe Linus will come along and save the day by telling Redhat that they
can NO longer use the word "Linux" until they lighten up a little! :-)
(Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds, and I know that's
not going to happen, but I can dream . . . :)
