I had the same problem with Deltek Advantage.  But it just used MSSQL
server so I setup the server to _only_ support MSSQL.  I used
"sockets"-based access (i.e. IP sockets), not "named pipes" (i.e. SMB
authentication).  The system did _nothing_ but that accounting system. 
All file storage was still on Unix-Samba servers and NetApp filers.
