I understand completely, I also live in the "sticks" and my
options for broadband are very limited.

I didn't say that I won't buy a dish of some sort.  I said that
"I've resisted so far" which means I'm still shopping and
waiting for something that is better supported by Linux, and
waiting for the price to drop.

At least I can keep an eye on them and wait for a price drop.

This isn't a great help, but if I was in your situation, I'd
use the old "trial & error" method.  Try something small, try
something large, but most of all:  try something different.

You may also find your exact problem talked about on the
newsgroups.  Searching groups.google.com can be very helpful.
