I'll cut to the chase... My DAT drive is working!
I tried resetting the SCSI ID's with no success. So I grabbed a retired
Adaptec 2940 from work (vintage 1996), installed it, and moved the tape
drive from the controller connected to the HD's to the 2940. A mt -t
/dev/st0 status immediately returned information on the drive. So brimming
with confidence, I popped into Gnome and launched the Arkeia backup program.
So as I write the message, I'm watching the little speedometer hovering
around 55MB/min as the drive is quietly writing to tape a full backup of my
system. Looks like Linux (or something within) did not like the tape drive
connected to the same controller as the HD's (even though it was on a
different channel).
Thanks to all who helped. Now, on to Samba...
