Ok, Ok.... "Use nautilus to draw the desktop", under "Windows & Desktop"
in "Preferences" - "Edit Preferences".  So you can have desktop icons,
right click on the desktop, etc...  As a simple file manager it works
fine.  It seems as though the panels and nautilus simply are not aware
of each other.
