Yep, I can't make it happen on other boxes either.  So I logged of my
workstation,  wheeled over to the system console, rm'd /home/awilliam/.gnome, 
logged back in and GNOME/Nautlius all popped up as default, worked great.  Had
to re-add some of my customizations,  but it works now.  Must have been
something strange in the bizarre hive mind that lives beneath $HOME/.gnome
