[Disclaimer:  I've only used the automounter on HPUX, never Linux]

The automounter will only mount directories when they are accessed.
As long as your user never clicks on the directory in their file
manager when they are not connected, it shouldn't be a problem.

If that's a problem, you could add the "soft" option to the mount
so it would time out if it can't be mounted.  (never tried it myself)

The automounter will also umount a directory after a specified idle
time.  Plus [At least on HPUX] you can manually umount the directory
before the time expires.  You could add a umount command to the eth0
stop script if you plan on doing hot unplugging from your network.
