OK, I am confused then - are you manipulating the data then after the fact and
the php engine is slowing you down?  Or is it something in the lookups
themselves that is adding to the time elapsed?  Sometimes external
'lookup-only' tables can help speed up large searches.  Of course, optimizing
queries in general helps performance.
