>this brings up a question... it may have been discused before but.. how do
>XFS and ReiserFS compare... (both facts and opinions) performance,
>reliablity, stability of the kernel driver... etc.??
>just wondering really...

Maturity:

XFS is a respectable middle aged very slightly balding guy whose been
involved in the UNIX industry for over a decade. Reiserfs is a pimply
pre-teen who listens to Brittany Spears. Which one do you want to
depend on?

Family Values:

XFS follows the path of the one true inode, and is structurally a
"Standard" UNIX file system. Reiserfs thinks this is all stuffy old
nonsense*

*The end result is that you don't want to use Resierfs on an NFS server,
and possibly other applications. Sure lots of posts say that with the
latest patch it ***finally*** works great, but whats you data worth?

Speed:

Both are Olypmic silver medalists (Ms. JFS holds the gold). Reiserfs is
faster if you give it lots of small jobs, XFS isn't bad at that but
really excels when heavy data lifting needs to be done and doesn't even
flinch when presented with a >2Gb file.

Example: I have a clipart directory, each sub-directory contains ~300
4~8k files. In reiserfs "ls -R" is almost instantaneous, with XFS one
gets a slight hesitation, with ext2... well, we won't talk about that.

Security:

XFS installs shock collars on all his children, and chastitiy belts on
his daughters. Reiserfs? Well, he wants a blood test to prove there
his kids.

Example: With Samba 2.2.1 and XFS you can use WinNT explorer and set
all the funny little security rules you want just like in NTFS, or you
can do the same from the UNIX command line using the XFS utilities.
Gone (thank your local diety) is chmod/chgrp/chown and their short
sighted little security model.

the deep roots are untouched by the frost."

>Nevermedle in the affairs of wizards (or sysadmins) for they are subtle and
>quick to anger.

Hmmm, I've never been accused of being subtle.

Thanks for the link! I was wondering where to get that from. :) Is
there a Linux version?
