First off, I have a set of shell scripts to maintain multiple
.config/Makefiles. I wrote them largely to facilitate the ability
to assign EXTRAVERSIONS to the end of a kernel label (so I don't
have to worry about overwriting existing modules).

Secondly, I assume you know that most distros put the .config files
of precompiled kernels in a ./configs or other directory under
/usr/src/linux. But other than them, I don't know how to get your
settings if you blew away your .config.

Hence why I have my shell scripts.
