Look at http://www.dynip.com for the problem of finding the machine's IP.  They give you a client program to install (I've done it on SuSE 7.1 with minimal trouble) That lets you connect to that machine by a name, <something>.dynip.com.  They charge a bit for the service, but I think it's like $100.00 a year.  There might be other implementations of Dynamic DNS out there, also.
