I'd suggest /sbin/ifconfig or using ethereal to look at the entire packet.  It
is more fun to have the entire packet to look at.

What I'd really like to know is if there is a way to find out the amount of
bandwidth an interface is using.  The volume of bits going through it in a
second would be nice.

Hey I think I just answered my own question.  Looks like sar may be an
appropriate tool.  Any other suggestions.
