multi-path routing is provided by netfilter, a subsystem of the 2.4.x kernel.
I don't know off hand of any way to achieve that under with a 2.2.x system (or
any other OS for that matter). There are non-EQL/non-multi-path ways to do this
put they are all pretty bulky (routing protocols, multiple squid instances,
etc...) and are probably more of a pain than they are worth.
