And IMO it makes more sense to run windows in VMware on top of a
native Linux install, instead of the other way around.  I would 
want to run the most stable OS native.  

If you're running Linux in VMware under windows (as you suggested), 
and windows crashes, guess what?  VMware and the guest OS crashes too!
