The Linux Desktop of the Future
by Glenn Jacobson
Glenn, who drives a white van with 5 ft. full color Tux
logos on the sides, used a laptop and the SVGA projector
to show us his presentation. He also brought along the
Model 150 Thin Station that his company sells ($395 w/o
monitor) for LTSP non-proprietary workstations. This was
our second presentation on this subject and I can say that
Glenn has seriously improved his arguments and it looks
like his company is in growth mode. This time he convinced
us that Linux is THE BUSINESS SOLUTION for the desktop and
the WHOLE business! Accounting to the art department...
Linux provides Open Source applications in a solid network
low cost/ high productivity environment. Linux HAS arrived
on the desktop. PERIOD! Ignore all reports to the contrary!
Glenn meets every argument head-on with the facts! LINUX!

In this presentation, Glenn walked us through a compelling
business case for Open Source development in general, Linux in
particular and preferred architectures, to be specific. We
went over why why Linux has the characteristics desired for
developing desktop applications, and then detailed why thin
clients will become more common as the software and other
aspects of the environment evolve. This presentation was
rounded out by case studies developed in a law office and
manufacturing company, showing how all of these technologies
were deployed effectively.
Glenn has been in the computer services business for 34 years.
He is a 1964 graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Go Badgers)
and a big fan of Big Ten football and basketball. He is the CEO
and founder of Unique Systems (USI). Prior to forming USI in
1990, Glenn held positions in programming, systems design and
management. USI was started as a custom database accounting
software firm, to follow in the footsteps he'd formed earlier
in his career to bring quality computer software services to
business. Based on his experience USI was started as a firm that
uses SQL database accounting software that runs on UNIX. Thus
in 1995 when Linux became available as a turnkey Internet server,
it provided all the basic components he looked for in a computing
product to enter into the new internet/intranet arena. After five
years of experience working with Linux, USI has had phenomenal
success. Glenn has many examples to relate why he feels that
Linux represents the future of computing. Glenn has also given
talks on Linux on the Desktop and Linux & Intellectual Property
issues at the annual Paris Linux Expo, as well as organizing the
"2nd Annual Linux @ the Office" held in Toledo (2001). More

Directory Enabled Linux / LDAPv3
by Adam Williams
Adam will explain the purpose and configuration of directory
services on Linux, specifically OpenLDAP 2.0.x. Process
authentication, mail routing, and personal information within
a single unified service which sports flexibility, performance
and start-to-finish encryption. Examples of integration with
Samba (as a NT/WinY2K PDC), sendmail, PAM, NSS, and other
services.
Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a
regular contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing
list, both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

NEW KLUG VOLUNTEER POSITION AVAILABLE - NUTRIMASTER!
It has been proposed that this volunteer will be responsible
for seeing that we have cookies and milk available for
the weekly presentation meetings. KLUG will reimburse the

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note: It is November!!! What is the IRS's reason NOW?}

The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

BOOGIE'S CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogie's is being
supplemented by Peter Buxton. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU

WHAT IS KLUG? -
KLUG is a volunteer group formed by and for LINUX
system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.
THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help

As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
