They could use binary only kernel modules or binary only dynamically-loaded
shared libraries.  Personally I don't think there is really going to be anything
"proprietary",  it's "real" claim is that it assembled all these pieces.  Kernel
modules to increase compatibility of Win32 have been growing at the vineyard for
some time.  LD_PRELOAD to capture various system calls, etc...
