I. PRESENTATION RECAP

THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (22 active participants tonight)
*****************************************************************
Directory Enabled Linux / LDAPv3
by Adam Williams

See Adam's copyrighted LDAP presentation here -
ftp://ftp.kalamazoolinux.org/pub/pdf/ldapv3.pdf

Adam explained the purpose and configuration of directory
services on Linux, specifically OpenLDAP 2.0.x & v3.0.x.
Process authentication, mail routing, and personal information
within a single unified service which sports flexibility,
performance and start-to-finish encryption. Examples of
integration with Samba (as a NT/WinY2K PDC), sendmail, PAM,
NSS, and other services.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
======================
Adam used a laptop PC (on battery) and the KLUG SVGA
projector to show us the details of OpenLDAP directory
services and how it works on Unix and Linux! This was
not a presentation targeted for the novice. WOW! Adam
packed all the details and related into 139 Star Office
slides. Since LDAP support documentation is lacking...
Adam is preparing an even MORE detailed presentation
of LDAP, look for that resource in the future. Sorting
out the details in this complex area of administration
has been well pioneered by Adam. He made it understandable.
He used many examples to demonstrate usage syntax. There
were many people nodding and reacting to Adam's revelations.
Adam used humor to keep everyone's attention and it worked.
You could tell that he has thoroughly explored LDAP! His
laptop PC battery made it through the whole presentation,
despite beeping frantic warnings of impending interruption.
This was a 90 minute presentation and he averaged 1.5 slides
per minute! Smooth Operation!

Linux Directory Access Protocol (based on x.500 gov't
protocol std) Cross-platform directory server protocol.

Adam Williams is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a
regular contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing
list, both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

      NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 11/27/2001
********************************************************************
The Mac meets UNIX (OS X.1)
by David Butler

David will be speaking about the convergence of the Linux and
the open-source movement and Apple's BSD-based OS X. He will
discuss the integration of older software on Apple's new OS
and the state of native OS X software, including the prevalence
of ports from the Linux, BSD and OpenStep communities. He is
likely to touch on how the ability to run mainstream apps on
a Unix-based platform within a single consistent GUI makes him
absolutely giddy with pleasure (14 days of uptime running Photoshop
"WOO-HOO!"). He will also attempt to convince you that he is not
a Macintosh Zealot, but he might be lying.

David Butler is an independent computer consultant specializing
in Macintosh services and occasional web-design. His past
technical achievements include: The tedious hand-holding of Ohio
State University faculty, staff and students as they traversed
the technical vagaries of computers in the late 80's and early
90's (?No, the mouse doesn't work when you hold it up in the air?);
hanging dead mice by their tails in his dungeon-office as Macintosh
Systems-Coordinator of the statistically Macintosh-heavy Statistics
department at OSU (?Ha ha, dead mice, I get it! Too bad they only
have one button.?); and bruising his forehead against rigid
bureaucracy as Technical Support Supervisor of the Cambridge, MA
Micro Center (?Three men can easily do the job of five, especially
when they're on salary?). His decidedly strange business site can
be found at http://www.grandpanjandrum.com. Generally, he would
rather be skiing.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note:  It is November!!!  What is the IRS's reason NOW?}

The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.

charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogie's is being
supplemented by Peter Buxton. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU
installed on the main server. Contact "Robert G. Brown"

IV. GENERAL KLUG ANNOUNCEMENTS

WHAT IS KLUG? -
KLUG is a volunteer group formed by and for LINUX
system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,
see URL: http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/installform.html
Contact the KLUG Installmasters for more information:
installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

IF YOU KNOW OF ADDITIONAL LINKS that should be included
in the KLUG LINKS page... please send e-mail suggestions
to <linkmaster@kalamazoolinux.org> so the LINKS team
can review the content of the site.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We have received notice that they are proceeding with the
processing of our request. We hope to hear from them
REAL SOON with notice of our charitable deductibility.
Charitable and tax-exemption status is routinely granted

help us attain our financial goals. We need working
