Ethernet and IP Networks
by Adam Williams
                             
An intermediate level overview of Ethernet, the worlds most
common LAN technology, and IP, the protocol that makes the
Internet go.  Understanding Ethernet and IP is essential to
troubleshooting in todays networked world.  The presentation
includes example commands for UNIX/Linux, Microsoft Windows,
Cisco IOS, and Nortel CLI.

Adam used his laptop PC and the KLUG SVGA video projector
to display his presentation.  Made with Star Office, it
will be posted to the past presentations page in .pdf format.

Network terms were defined and explained.  They included:
Packet, frame, MRV/MTU, fragment, host, router, gateway,
bridge, firewall, broadcast address, segment, net mask,
runt, jabber, MAC address, CDMA/CD, twisted pair, switching,
switch flow control, ARP, IP, IP classes, special IP's,
routing protocols, internet control message protocol, ping,
echo, trace route, port oriented communication between TCP
and UDP, socket, load balancing switches, and wireless 
networks.

Generally ethernet networks can only get 40-50% performance
of its capacity.  
                             
Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but
the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a
couple of hundred workstations, running Linux and other
Operating Systems.  Not only does he deal with domain issues
at work, but he is also the owner of the domain "whitemice.org".
Adam has been a regular contributor to technical discussions
on our main mailing list, both presenting and solving some of
the most challenging networking and configuration problems. 

We snacked on chocolate chip cookies after the meeting!!!

GRUB: Not Just for Breakfast Anymore.

Yes, GRUB is more than a fine food served on TV programs
like Survivor and other reality shows.  GRUB is a bootloader
like LILO, except with a lot more power and flexability.
GRUB is the default bootloader on the Redhat 7.2 beta
(rawhide) releases.

Come watch as Bruce demos GRUB on the big screen with
his laptop, and learn how to install GRUB on your own
computer.  Also learn how to make your very own GRUB
floppy disk that can boot any partition on any computer,
even partitions that were left unbootable by a typo in
your lilo.conf file, or if you forgot to run lilo after
updating your kernel. 
                             
Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for
a HP-UX network of Servers, Workstations, printers and
X-Terminals spanning five buildings in Three Rivers.  Bruce
has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Central
Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot
of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

NEW KLUG VOLUNTEER POSITION AVAILABLE - NUTRIMASTER!
It has been proposed that this volunteer will be responsible
for seeing that we have cookies and milk available for
the weekly presentation meetings.  KLUG will reimburse the

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility.  Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations.  This should help us attain our financial
goals.  We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

BOOGIE'S CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure.  This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities.  Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day.  The network support for Boogie's is being
supplemented by Peter Buxton.  Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The  Linux OS STILL 
remains cool, calm, and constant!  Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up.  A game testing machine has been
configured.  Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU

THE LINUX VIDEO OUTREACH PROJECT -   
We are looking for a new "Post-Production Video Project
Manager."  Any ideas?  An idea has been proposed to
include footage of KLUG meeting activities.  A visual
demonstration of this "community supported" OS.  The
subjects covered in the video include the internet, Linux,
and KLUG.  This video will be presented repeatedly on local 
public access channels for educational and KLUG/Linux
promotional purposes.  KLUG presents "The Internet Demystified"

WHAT IS KLUG? -
KLUG is a volunteer group formed by and for LINUX
system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month.  Linux basics and distribution installs are the

As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting.  Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals.  The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's.  Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
