Well first off, at kernel.org, it's been renamed to:

 linux-2.4.11-dontuse.tar.gz   That's a pretty good hint.  :-)

I don't remember the exact details, but it doesn't do symbolic 
links correctly and can (and will) trash filesystems.
(or something like that . . .)
