That IS a wierd message. Su , whether logged in as root or as an 
unprivelieged user seems to work just fine for me. If I am not already 
root it asks for the password, if I AM already root it says 
"whattayanutz?" and just gives me the root prompt back. 

I am using bash ... what shell are you using? Under bash I can't duplicate 
your problem.
