Hi Bruce.

Tar version 1.13.19 has a bug in it. it doesn't restore links
properly. I mentioned this problem on here about 3 weeks ago, and
debian upgraded it to 1.13.22, and the problem has been fixed. I
don't know if it makes a difference, but I wasn't using the l
parameter with tar, and my system would totally lock up at the end of
backups. I had to press reset to restart the machine. However since
you're talking about network backups, you're probably not worried
about the l parameter which says you're backing up one file system.
It was a very weird problem. It would work with kernels below 2.2.10
without the l parameter, but once I went to a newer kernel than
2.2.09, it would lock up every time I did a backup. I'm using an
adaptec aha1510 card with a tandberg tdc-4100 drive.

Hope some of this helps.
