Once I figured out how to use LPRng, the HP 5n works great. It took a while,
but it now works great.

Unfortunately, you are at the mercy of printtool at that point. :)

As for PostScript: the HP uses PCL, which is evidentally well documented. So
much so that stock lpr could channel raw Wintel to it successfully. An HP
inkjet using PCL would work great.
