Is your Samba server the WINS server?  
Is it the browse master?  
Can you see the samba server with the nbtstat utility?  
Do you send a netbios-node-type via DHCP to the VM(s)?  
What is the domain name?  
Is it different from any machine name?
WinY2k and Win9x exhibit the same behaviour? (Very odd)
Can you smbclient -L localhost from the Samba host itself?
Can you smbclient -L blahblah from another Linux box or Linux VM?
