THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

There were 4 Linux laptops jacked into the 2.3 Mbits DSL
switch and were connected to the internet. Two KLUG'ites
received help with upgrades or confguration. One laptop
needed to have the USB module activated so it could connect
with an external CD-ROM drive. The other was a Thinkpad
with Red Hat v7.1 that was having problems seeing the
Winmodem. An upgrade to RH v7.2 was attempted but hard
drive space prevented the RPM from fully finishing.
While all of this was going on, Adam Williams and Dirk
Bartley grabbed a Linux laptop and a SVGA projector and
started a demonstration which showed how to get to GUI
networking control settings. Dirk showed the command
line methods and explained how it all works. It all
started with a question about how to turn networking off!
Dirk started out with pen and paper and transitioned to
laptop and projector. Adam jumped in to give added
details and display the GUI tools for network tweaking.
Of course, this evolved into a discussion of scripts and
daemons with all the history and theory behind the Unix
structure. I was even hearing several Real Time IT Games
that were being devised and visualized. Something about
a duel between two Linux guru's to see who could dominate
a PC's system resources. Adam smiled and said, "Calculate
a few prime numbers! That will bring things to a halt..."
Maybe it was getting late and it could have been the shock
from the "Cat's Cradle vehicle" in the parking lot when we
arrived. It was a rather surreal and pleasant evening of
learning, helping others, and Linux OS demonstrations.
I saw lots of smiles. Many people were communicating and
interacting in very positive ways tonight.
Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

Setting Up a Home Wireless Network with Linux
by Bruce Smith
Bruce will give an introduction to wireless networking, and
what it takes to add wireless to a small home network. This
will include what equipment and software is needed to
configure a Linux laptop as a wireless node. Security
considerations about going wireless will also be discussed.
Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for
a HP-UX network of Servers, Workstations, printers and
X-Terminals spanning five buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce
has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Central
Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot
of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

A KLUG PC RUNNING LINUX HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE
Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce to provide DHCP
services. This will enable easier internet access
for KLUG members attending meetings at the Chamber.
Lots more additions planned between KLUG and K C
of C. A newsgroup server, web server, networking,
and eventually EVERYTHING! The synergy is peaking!
Hardware is being installed and KLUG volunteers are

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT WAS WELL ATTENDED!
The big yellow KLUG banner was again proudly displayed
March 3, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in Grand Rapids!
The show was from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Crowne Plaza on
28th Street near I-196 (formerly the Marriott). Again,
lots of Linux CD-ROM's were made available to the public

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!

The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note: It is APRIL!!! What is the IRS's reason NOW?}

The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

BOOGIE'S CYBER CAFE - KLUG's public commercial Linux project.
Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogie's is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU
installed on the main server. Contact "Robert G. Brown"

processing of our request. We hope to hear from them
