I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (16 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Command Line Interface (CLI) Web Site Management
by Paul VandenBosch

Hand coding of html pages using a text editor is the most
flexible way to create single pages of html code. The
advantages of hand coding are clean, efficient code, easy
experimenting with various commands and a first hand
knowledge of how your site works and how it is organized.
When a web site starts to grow, it becomes more and more
difficult to maintain a standard background, font and
script format across the entire web site using hand coding
techniques. This presentation described a simple technique
that can be used to update and maintain a multipage website
using a text editor and a few linux commands. It allows
the user to edit the format of the entire web site by
changing one textfile.

See Paul VandenBosch's Presentation on the KLUG web site:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
**********************
Paul used a 5 page handout to guide us through his
command line interface (CLI) web management tricks.
He used simple Linux commands to make his overgrown
web site more efficient to update. He made a point
and explained that this was a problem solution and
not an extremely technical presentation. His guide
would make it easier for a non-technical Linux user
to employ this technique. He broke down the process
to Listing Page Components, Create a Directory, List
File Components, Create Text Files, Add Content to
Text Files, Write Executable Concatenator, Write a
Buildall Command, CHMOD the Files, and the Process
of Editing - Building - Publishing.

Many things were discussed during the Question &
Answer period that followed Paul taking us through
his easy to understand and well done handout. Other
tools like Glimmer (Gnome), Bluefish, KATE (KDE),
and Project Builder (Apple) were discussed. The
obligatory vi vs. emacs praises were also heard.
A suggestion was made to expand and improve the
technique with the use of the MAKE command and that
CVS could be useful. The whole process could be
enhanced to automatically ftp the new files to the
server when the udating is completed. The Linux OS
is such a flexible and powerful environment to work
in. Great built-in tools are readily available.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Paul VandenBosch is the Building and Development Director for
the City of South Haven, Michigan. Paul's experience of growing
up in an urban neighborhood in Grand Rapids led him to choose
a career in urban redevelopment. He received a doctorate in
urban planning from the University of Nymegen, the Netherlands,
and a bachelor degree in urban planning and geography from the
University of Michigan. In his spare time, Paul is either
sailing, working on his sailboat, or dreaming about sailing.
He maintains a personal homepage that is a very popular website
for sailing enthusiasts. Paul and his wife Anne-Marie also
enjoy traveling and sightseeing by car. A linux user for about
a year, the user friendly characteristics of Red Hat 7.2 make
it possible for Paul to use a linux-only box for all of his
home pc needs.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 04/23/2002

Disk Management
by Adam Williams

Working with disk drives can be a dangerous and tricky task.
Fortunately Linux offers several tools for partitioning disk,
creating and resizing file systems. Beyond those basics,
there is Logical Volume Management, Software Raid, and disk
spanning files systems. Learn not only what these terms mean
but how easy it is to use them, and just how robust that free
operating system really is.

WE ARE REVISITING A PREVIOUS PRESENTATION BY ADAM WITH UPDATES!

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with
a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux and other
Operating Systems. Not only does he deal with domain
issues at work, but he is also the owner of the domain
"whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular contributor to
technical discussions on our main mailing list, both
presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note:  It is  A P R I L !!!  What is the IRS's reason NOW?}
------------------------------------------------------------
The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU
installed on the main server. Contact "Robert G. Brown"

It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
