I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (18 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Disk Management
by Adam Williams

Working with disk drives can be a dangerous and tricky task.
Fortunately Linux offers several tools for partitioning disk,
creating and resizing file systems. Beyond those basics,
there is Logical Volume Management, Software Raid, and disk
spanning files systems. Learn not only what these terms mean
but how easy it is to use them, and just how robust that free
operating system really is.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*************************
Adam used a laptop running Linux and the SVGA projector
to take us through a 51 slide presentation that covered
disk management in detail. He explained everything from
hard drive mechanics and geometry to device controllers
and more in his introduction. After describing the file
system functions and listing the pros and cons of various
file systems, Adam showed us how Linux handles all this
including common mount options, etc/fstab, and utilities.
At this point, we got into the disk management content.
It was broken down into three areas, 1.) Traditional,
2.) Multiple Device (MD) Software RAID, and 3.) Logical
Volume Management (LVM) [see www.sistina.com ]. Adam
described the MD and LVM technology with great detail.
We saw the LVM Administrator [see www.widd.de/bernd/lva/ &
www.xs4all.nl/~mmj/lvm ] and talked about SUSE's use
of LVM in that Linux distribution. We had a question and
answer period and then Adam received a standing ovation
from the appreciative KLUG attendees! GOOD JOB ADAM!
He was using Open Office for this presentation.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids,
but the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with
a couple of hundred workstations, running Linux and other
Operating Systems. Not only does he deal with domain
issues at work, but he is also the owner of the domain
"whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular contributor to
technical discussions on our main mailing list, both
presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 04/30/2002 DON'T MISS THIS ONE!
********************************************************************
Fight SPAM Now!
by Robert G. Brown

We all get it, and we don't like it! How can we get
rid of it? Learn a few tools and techniques that can
turn us all into world-class spam fighters. Let's all
work together to drive spam and spammers off the net.
Also, we will take a look at what a sustained effort,
and a little persistance can do.

Robert Brown is a founding member, past chairman, the
current publicity director of KLUG, and has over 25
years experience in software development in numerous
environments, disciplines, and industries. An
intermittant user of UNIX systems for over 15 years,
Bob has developed applications with Linux in the
course of his professional and volunteer activities.
He can also be seen cycling the Kal-Haven trail,
wandering around, perpetrating nature photography or
traveling to some fairly unusual places. Recently,
he was elected to chair a major SIG of the ACM.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note:  It is  A P R I L !!!  What is the IRS's reason NOW?}
------------------------------------------------------------
The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and

great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU
installed on the main server. Contact "Robert G. Brown"

As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We have received notice that they are proceeding with the
processing of our request. We hope to hear from them
REAL SOON with notice of our charitable deductibility.
Charitable and tax-exemption status is routinely granted
to educational not-for-profit organizations. This should
help us attain our financial goals. We need working
capital for increased Linux promotional activities.

WOW!!! STILL NO WORD FROM THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE!
STILL NO 501(c)(3) ISSUED TO KLUG!!!

The Kalamazoo Linux Users Group would like to
thank the Law firm of Kreis Enderle Callander &
Hudgins for their generousity toward KLUG. Matt
DePerno has made contributions of his time to
assist us in our attempts to achieve 501(c)(3) tax
status with the IRS!!!

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.
Bring a friend... who was disappointed by a proprietary OS!

THANKS to ARMSTRONG INTERNATIONAL, INC. for providing their
much appreciated IT Resources to support KLUG and Linux.

THANKS to KALAMAZOO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE for providing their
well appointed facilities for our meetings. Jas Networks
has donated a 2.3 Mbit connection that we used during the
meetings to allow attendees to connect by wire and also
wireless 802.11b network connections through the Michigan
Wireless Network. Many projectors, flip chart easel and
projection screens have been made available.
