Your certain RedHat doesn't have an update RPM for ld?  It doesn't make
sense to
release a new kernel RPM / modutils rpms without the dependencies.

What version of modutils are you installing? modutils-2.4.13-0.7.1.i386.rpm?

Ah!  ld.so is now bundled in glibc!
lnx01688:~ $rpm -qf /lib/ld-2.2.4.so
glibc-2.2.4-19.3

I must have checked a <7.2 box before.

So grab the new glibc packages,  which is a good idea anyway.  Threading has
much impoved as of late, along with motion toward support of process
pinning.
