Xcessive XML: XSLT & XML Transforms

The information about this presentation is all in the title.
PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

Andrew used a laptop running Linux, the KLUG SVGA projector,
and the word processor in OpenOffice v1.0 to show us the
basics of Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation
(XSLT). We heard about XSLT processors and what they can
do with an XML file. We saw how the HTML code is generated.
At one point, we saw an XML file, the XSLT code, and the
resulting HTML code generated all on the display at once.
We had a history lesson in HTML background and why XML was
needed. HTML is too limited and not document format oriented.
XML was compared to SGML. XSL is used in the process of
producing a stylesheet. It tells the XSLT processor how to
render the XML file content. XSLT converts the XML file into
many other formats, not just HTML.
We had examples of stylesheets and discussed XSLT elements.

Defining the template rules was explained.
Orien Vandenbergh assited in this presentation and it was
some of his sample code that was used in the demonstration
of how XSLT functions. The projector was switched to Orien's
Apple G4 laptop and we saw how the whole process works.
Thanks to Orien for adding great content for understanding
this material.
Andrew answered many questions and explained the details as
items of interest were observed. The group broke into informal
discussion of XSLT and XML, as well as many other Linux related
topics.

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT PLAN A SUCCESSFUL EVENT!
The big yellow KLUG banner will again be proudly displayed on
August 31, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This will be the important back to school show for the season.
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
Again, lots of Linux CD-ROM's were made available to the public

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. Various upgrades and enhancements are
being applied currently, including three new workstations and
other hardware upgrades. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>
to help out or for more info. Get on the Boogies Volunteer
mailing list and start learning and contributing today!
A KLUG PC RUNNING LINUX HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE KALAMAZOO CHAMBER
of Commerce to provide DHCP services. This will enable easier
internet access for KLUG members attending meetings at the Chamber.
Lots more additions planned between KLUG and K C of C. A newsgroup
server, web server, networking, and eventually EVERYTHING! The
synergy is peaking! Hardware is being installed and KLUG
