BEGINNER'S NIGHT SUMMARY: MASS MIGRATION TO LINUX

The mass migration to Linux was apparent at the Beginner's
Meeting tonight. Three install requests came in prior to
the meeting but workstations kept appearing until six PC's
and one laptop were awaiting KLUG installation assistance!
More machines than Install Masters. No one was complaining
about the fast paced excitement of the evening.
So many PC's were powered up, in addition to the five
laptops plugged into the DSL hub and several connected
by 802.11b wireless, that the circuit breakers could not
handle all the demand and tripped several times. We soon
discovered the need for quick A/C electric load-balancing.
Suse v8.0 was the overwhelming Linux OS of choice for the
evening. One Slackware v8.0 installation was witnessed
and several others were working with BS-Ware. Despite
several common technical problems, it looked like all the
difficulties encountered were easily solvable. Hope you
Suse v8.0 fans can read and write German! <support joke>
Lots of Linux info was exchanged. There were several
visitors in attendance tonight that are already one
third of their way to becoming full KLUG members! Only
two more meetings... and it will be official. $25 grants
you supporting member benefits for one year!
Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
Bruce Smith is a Systems Administrator and Software Developer
for Armstrong International Inc. where he is responsible for
an HP-UX network of Servers, workstations, printers and
X-terminals spanning five buildings in Three Rivers. Bruce
has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Central
Michigan University. (go Chips! :) Bruce runs Linux, almost
exclusively, on all his PC's at work and home, and runs a lot
of Armstrong's networking services on Linux!

Timber!!! [Linux Log Files]

One of the most useful tools in securing and troubleshooting a
UNIX/Linux system are the logs. Tonight, we'll cover how syslog,
the messaging daemon, manages your log messages and how to create
automated responses to specific messages. We'll also cover the
log files of common applications such as Samba and HTTP, as well
as the dmesg.
Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT PLAN A SUCCESSFUL EVENT!
The big yellow KLUG banner will again be proudly displayed on
August 31, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This will be the important back to school show for the season.
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
