[KLUG Members] Email compatibility?

I *think* standard smtp should work. A friend of mine has Exchange at his company (>300 users) and their Exchange server actually forwards to a Red Hat 6.0 box for sending outside the company. That is not a conclusive answer, I know. And I am NOT an Exchange expert nor do I even use it.

Is it easy to try and then disable quickly if it doesn't work?

I have a canned piece of software (voice mail) that can be configured
to send email under certain conditions, and I'd like that to happen.
However, it only lists compatibility with M$ Exchange, and I don't want
it to happen bad enough to setup an Exchange server just for it.

I have zero experience with Exchange, and know nothing about it. My
questions are: Is outgoing email on Exchange standard SMTP? If I point
this software to a Linux/Sendmail server, should I expect it to work?
Or is the Exchange protocol something PROPRIETARY?
