[KLUG Members] RH 7.3, rpm sefaults when installing, upgrading, erasing

I've been having an 'interesting' problem with rpm, in RedHat 7.3.  On
one particular machine, rpm -qa and pretty much all query commmands work
just fine, no errors.  rpm -U, -i, -e, etc.  cause a segmentation fault.
I've tried --rebuilddb, no change.  I've also tried moving the
/var/lib/rpm directory, and then running --initdb.  That doesn't seem to
have been what I needed either.  It seems that the database is okay, (as
the query and such work fine).  -v seems to work well, as well.  
Any thoughts on what I might do, or am I probably going to end up just
having to reinstall the machine or something?  Has anyone else had
anything similar?  I believe that there are only a few non-redhat
packages installed, the only one I can think of off-hand is possibly
ldap server...
