Maybe the X server is running high enough that it interferes with apps
trying to draw to it. :-) I imagine the client running on a different
machine than the X server makes a huge difference. I also imagine that
preemption helps because it increases the ability of the kernel to mimic
true multitasking: uniprocessor multitasking is always concurrent (fake)
multitasking, and reducing the unbreakable bits of code always helps to
mimic true multitasking.

XMMS had a problem because it tried, on the same uniprocessor
machine, to:

1) Play music, and then
2) Graph the output on the X server.

The two real-time tasks interfered with each other quite a bit.
Low-latency, and then preemption, both make XMMS usable. Before, while
it played, you couldn't drag it across the screen.

Between LL and preemption I recommend whichever works with XFS. They're
such well-behaved patches you can install *both* if you like.(1) ;-)

(1) This may no longer be true, depending.
