BTW, on one of the machines I've upgraded I had to -

/usr/bin/pango-querymodules > /etc/pango/pango.modules

after the upgrade when gdm shoed up with no text/fonts.  Pango is the package
GNOME2 uses to lookup fonts, do internationalization, etc...  The above makes
sure the package is initialized.
