When I have it set to use a transparent background just moving the window jumps the cpu usage to 100%. Otherwise it hangs around 0.99%. I'm going back to a solid background. Moving that window jumps the cpu usage to 45% tops.

That's fine. I did change the key bindings for switching the workspace focus. Works fine now, until they change the standard again!
Xterm doesn't seem to have the ^J problem when I ssh to my mail server. The only problem with that is the ugly colors. I used to be able to change them from a menu in the terminal window. That menu seems to be gone now. Any ideas where to change the colors for Xterm?
I've also looked all over for what is trapping that ^J in gnome-terminal. Looking at Edit | keybindings doesn't revel a ^J.
