Running a Manufacturing Shop with Linux
by David E. Capel, CPIM and Steven C. Mete
David E. Capel, CPIM and Steven C. Mete presented Man-Tec/ERP,
an online, real-time and fully integrated accounting, distribution,
and manufacturing/job shop solution designed specifically for the
small-to-midsize discrete and/or process manufacturer, job shop
and/or industrial distributor. All MAN-TEC solutions are available
on various Linux-based platforms. Please feel free to take a look
at our website www.man-tec.com and bring questions related to
MAN-TEC or the manufacturing industry in general. MAN-TEC is
headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with offices in Grand Rapids,
Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; and San Antonio, Texas.
PRESENTATION SUMMARY:

David and Steven used a laptop and the KLUG SVGA projector
to show us a live action demonstration of their Man-Tec/ERP
software that runs on multiple platforms including Linux/Unix.
It is built upon the Thoroughbred database engine written in
Advanced Business BASIC. In their own words Man-Tec/ERP is
a distribution, manufacturing and job shop, accounting, and
integration solution available for Linux! We saw the software
flexibility and detail in various modules loaded with demo
data. Everything appeared to run smoothly. During the demo
there were many questions about specifics within the modules.
This software comes with source code and the ability to make
changes by the customer, if desired. Man-Tec provides custom
modifications as well as quality assurance updates if needed.
Modules included sales orders, inventory tracking, purchase
orders, general ledger, billing, accounts receivable,
accounts payable, payroll, BOM and Routings, shop control,
costing, and quality control! There were other utility
and integration modules shown to us including configuration
applications. Data can be accessed by a 2-way ODBC manager.
The entire system can be made web based if the customer
wants that accessibility or it can be run over low cost
network terminals.
David and Steven handled the answers well and enlightened
us about the nature of their services. The knowledge and
grasp of their customer was apparent in their explanations.
They had several handouts that contained details on who the
Man-Tec people are and what their product and support offers.

David is an APICS-certified manufacturing consultant that has been
implementing manufacturing solutions for over 25 years. He holds
degrees in computer science as well as business management and
marketing. Steve has held various technical, professional and
management positions for over 25 years while in the U.S. Navy
and with several Grand Rapids area manufacturers. He holds degrees
in electronics and engineering.

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

KLUG "PC SHOW" PUBLIC OUTREACH PROJECT PLAN A SUCCESSFUL EVENT!
The big yellow KLUG banner will again be proudly displayed on
August 31, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This will be the important back to school show for the season.
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
