Right, nothing is going to work with the IP's you had.
(unless you setup a router, or create non-standard routes)

On Redhat you can use their GUI network config tool (who's name varies
depending on which version of Redhat).  Or you can edit the text file:

  /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

I don't know about the other distributions.

Networking does have a learning curve.  :-)

KLUG also runs a "novices" mailing list.  It might be better 
to continue this topic there if you have more problems.
