Not certain what the "long run" is, but it makes something that isn't secure
even less so.

No, NT/WinY2k/Xpee do, for complete functionality.

It really isn't that hard.  And once you done it,  you just forget about it. 
And having the NT hash around is rather handy for PPP or VPN CHAP authentication.
