Linux for Beginners
by Dirk Bartley

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

BEGINNER'S / INSTALL NIGHT SUMMARY:
**************************************
Dirk opened the evening with the usual announcements and
asked us to introduce ourselves and mention something
that we are happy for. Many were happy for KLUG and the
relationships and empowerment that have resulted from it.

There was plenty of good energy flowing tonight and several
people that were new to Linux asked some great questions.
Not only were the questions answered but they got to use a
real Linux workstation and get the "live OS tour" from Dirk
Bartley. Even Solitaire is more fun on the Linux Desktop!

There were at least seven help/install projects going on as
the evening progressed. Wes helped a member get his USB
mouse working on his Linux laptop. Bob took over with to
help the same member get his internal modem working. Peter
helped a member with a successful full install of Mandrake 9
on a desktop. Andrew helped a first timer to get his
wireless network card working with Mandrake 9. Stu was
helping a member with the configuration of SaMBa through
Webmin. Andrew was getting assistance with an X server
issue. Zac was spotted helping a first timer to get his
wireless network card working in M$ WINDOWS! <GASP!> Shows
the KLUG will help anybody with anything in the Open Source
spirit! Surely we will get that laptop to received BS-Ware
in the near future. Lots of humor and news was being freely
exchanged in the process of all this interaction. There was
a great deal of chuckling and smiling evident as the time
raced by... another longer than usual meeting. People were
still at it and grinning at 9:30pm.

Thanks to all the KLUG Linux wizards that volunteered their
knowledge and time to help each other make the most of KLUG's
support resources. That reminds me of how the night was
opened by Dirk! Aren't we all lucky to be part of KLUG???

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 12/10/2002
******************************************************************
(Unless a last minute presenter pops up...)
Linux: Open Forum Discussion
by Dirk Bartley

No formal presentation has been scheduled for this
meeting. It will be an open forum discussion of
Linux and related subjects.

Bring your questions and be ready to participate in
a wide open discussion of Linux OS issues, advocacy,
KLUG dynamics, hardware choices, application features,
and just about anything else you can think of.
