OK, thanks to all who responded. I got it working...

I used Adam's configuration lines...
define(`LUSER_RELAY', `sardine')dnl
define(`LOCAL_RELAY', `sardine')dnl
define(`SMART_HOST', `sardine')dnl

Substituting my own mail server name for "sardine".

But that didn't make it work alone... Bruce Smith
sent me some private e0-mail with a bunch of questions,
and in gathering the info to answer those questions,
I came the challenge just how names were being resolved
on the network. This resulted in a slight change, and
the discovery of an error in the setup for the new
machine. When I fixed those, it all worked fine.

Actually, Adam's idea might be a bit of overkill for
me (actually, this situation), since if I send a mail
message from a third machine to the webserver, sendmail
on that box doesn't deliver it locally, but forwards
it to the "main" mail server. This can no doubt be
changed by removing one of the definitions (probably
LOCAL_RELAY).

So thanks to Justin, Adam, and Bruce... on to the next
problem (and message)...
