Hey. Bob had agreed to mail KLUG on my problems with a PDC20265-enabled
kernel. Well, I installed from an old set of floppies and got it working
again.

Weird. Even the old kernel I kept couldn't reboot my box. I got to:

Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.31
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
VP_IDE: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 21
VP_IDE: chipset revision 6
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx

    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xb808-0xb80f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
PDC20265: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 88
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:11.0
PDC20265: chipset revision 2
PDC20265: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PDC20265: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode.
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0x7400-0x7407, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0x7408-0x740f, BIOS settings: hdg:DMA, hdh:DMA

ide3 at 0x8000-0x8007,0x7802 on irq 10
hda: 1667232 sectors (854 MB) w/64KiB Cache, CHS=827/32/63, DMA
hde: 60036480 sectors (30739 MB) w/1916KiB Cache, CHS=59560/16/63, UDMA(100)
hdg: 78165360 sectors (40021 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=77545/16/63, UDMA(100)
hdh: 78165360 sectors (40021 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=77545/16/63, UDMA(100)
Partition check:
 hda: hda1 hda2
 hde: hde1 hde2
 hdg: unknown partition table
 hdh: unknown partition table

And ka-boom, total halt. No errors, no nothing. You can see that it read
those partitions correctly. (Yes, those drives have no partitions. Yes,
I tried booting without them. Yes, actually, I tried booting with
nothing plugged in but the CD-ROM. No dice, till the floppies.) I booted
from several CD-ROMS, trying to boot from them to /dev/hde2. Nada.

The sole clue:

PDC20265: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PDC20265: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode.

looked like this when I couldn't boot:

PDC20265: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PDC20265: (U)DMA Burst Bit DISABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode.
PDC20265: FORCING Burst Bit 0x00 -> 0x01 Active.

Hmm. Back to the drawing board.
