I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (21 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Cyrus IMAP (Mail Server)
by Adam Williams

Most distributions of Linux ship with the University of
Washington IMAP and POP3 services for providing basic mail
services to a variety of clients. Cyrus IMAP is an
alternative suite of mail server applications for providing
sophisticated mail services such as shared folders, bulletin
boards, NNTP integration, service side scripting and
filtering , etc... Developed by Carnegie Mellon University
Cyrus IMAP is used by many large e-mail installations
(>10,000 users).

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
************************
Adam made an encore presentation by popular demand when our
original speaker was unable to make it due to employment
cahnges that were beyond his control. We all wish Richard
Zimmerman <ke4rit@attbi.com> our best wishes in the new
year with his workplace challenges and changes. We may yet
hear his LTSP presentation that was unavoidably cancelled!
Richard <aka Goose> is a very valued contributer to KLUG!!!

Adam used a laptop PC running the Linux OS, OpenOffice v1.0.1,
and the KLUG SVGA projector to show us why you should consider
using Cyrus IMAP. This was a very detailed and professional
demonstration of a valuable open source server application for
the Linux OS. Great things are happening with this OS & apps!
This presentation was even better this time around. Adam does
very professional presentations and we are so lucky that he is
the KLUG program director.

During this presentation, Adam told us about the University
of Washington IMAP project and compared Cyrus IMAP. He showed
how Cyrus was superior, in various ways, and easy to get running.
We heard about the protocols that Cyrus IMAP supports and saw
a list of server features. Looked like everything was included.

Download the Linux RPM for Cyrus IMAP here:
http://home.teleport.ch/simix cyrus-imapd-2.1.9-3.src.rpm

Adam was smiling through the configuration process and he let
us know that the 80 or more settings in /etc/imapd.conf
were managable for operations. He showed us the admin shell.
It handled the quota notification process and authentication
without a snag for Adam's 200-seat commercial implementation.

We heard about migration from U of W IMAP to Cyrus IMAP!
The instructions for doing this are posted on the KLUG
web site! <see above> Ready for a better implementation?
The question and answer period was active and several areas
of understanding Cyrus IMAP were explored further.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but
the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a
couple of hundred workstations, running Linux and other
Operating Systems. Not only does he deal with domain issues
at work, but he is also the owner of the domain
"whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular contributor to
technical discussions on our main mailing list, both
presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

Elcomsoft was found not guilty of violating the DMCA!!!
This does not invalidate the DMCA but it is a start in
bringing this flawed internet regulation to an end through
the decision process of the courts.

The WAP at the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce enables wireless
connection to the internet and use of the kindly donated DSL
bandwidth provised to KLUG by Jasnet! The WAP transmitter is
wired into the power circuit of the hallway lights in the
Chamber offices and is often shutdown when those lights are
turned off. We are wondering if a KLUG volunteer would be
willing to commit to a project that would seek permission from
the Chamber and help with the rewiring of this WAP transmitter.
Please contact Dirk Bartley <chairman@kalamazoolinux.org> if
you could volunteer to help get this situation corrected.
