I don't recommend using Magneto Optical (CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW) media
for anything but "short term" storage. The error rate is unacceptable
for production archiving let alone even mid-term storage. Magnetic can
be just as good.
I'd also do a verify after any copies. Is there an option to some cp
command/equivalent to do this somewhere (I checked both cp and cpio in
"-p" passthru mode, nope)?
The only way to overcome the limitations of MO are to add all kinds of
verification. That's what PD-CD and its successor DVD-RAM does. It's
also why DVD-RAM was first DVD rewritable standard (by several years),
it was an archive format, not a consumer format. This also means
DVD-RAM discs play in very few players (and not because of the
cartridge, you can remove the disc and still use it).

Ah, I didn't know that. Are most kernels still compiled with max 8
devices? Or now the full 255 (or more?)?

Correct. Hence my fstab entry:
/dev/scd0 /mnt/dvdram auto user 0 0
