Did you edit /etc/mail/sendmail.cf or /etc/mail/submit.cf

Sendmail 8.12.x and greater use a seperate configuration for submissions 
(which solves alot of nasty little problems).

Also what does `hostname` report?  Can you look yourself up in DNS?
