i would have said IBM too.... until..... there is now a class action suit in
the UK against IBM for defective drives and ill-handling of warranty
issues.....

.... higher end fujitsu drives with their fluid bearings are good.....

the current top of the WD line is actually a fairly reliable series of
drives..... and the fastest IDE drive ever made is (for the moment) the 100
GB WD with 8 meg buffer.....

what is in my box? IBM... and hmmm whats that other one..... ohh gee IBM
also.... both deskstar series IDE drives..... one an old 5400rpm 8.4 and the
other a 45 gig 75GXP series 7200 rpm drive (the fastest IDE drive available
when i bought it....) the problems with the IBM drives were/are (not sure if
it's all fixed yet) with 75GXPs.... i however bought mine before that issue
came to light... and have not had the slightest problem with it.... i can
still personally recomend IBM if i only go by my own experience..... but
then again... there are those other drives...

currently the 75GXP series IBMs... still the fastest IBMs for sale (IDE
here... not even mentioning SCSI stuff) ....are the hottest running IDE
drives available today... unventalated they will get up to over 45 degrees
C...... make sure you have decent case airflow if you plan on buying
one.... they are also no longer the fastest..... the WD 1000BB with 8 meg
cache is faster AND cooler running..... but some people have issues with WD
reliability..... i personally have only owned two WDs.... one... a caviar
2850 .. 850 meg drive.... it's been abused... in and out of god known how
many boxes... and still runs.... never lost a bit of data ever...... the
other... was 3.2 gigs... and i only had about a year before i sold it......
so i dont know about it...

just throwing out some information...

Jeff
