What are you passing 'mount'?
I build fat, vfat, and msdos support into my kernel (yes, you only need
vfat to mount it, but I want to be on the safe side ) and I just do this:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdb5 /mnt/disk and it has ne'er failed me. I can
write, read, have fun, etc. But permissions change when you copy to the
drive.
