I hope you know Ext2 and Ext3 are developed in the same project,
under the same man, Stephen Tweedie (of RedHat). Much of the
codebase is exactly the same, especially in the 2.4 kernel.

Ext2 is not only instantly upgradable to Ext3, but Ext3 can be
converted back to Ext2 almost as quickly.

P.S. I usually make my root (/) filesystem Ext2 so I can always
boot with any kernel or recovery disk. Other than that though, I
use Ext3 or XFS.
