THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help

Now is the time to get started! Linux has become the mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*********************************
ANNOUNCEMENTS...
There were several announcements made tonight that are
reported in these KLUG Meeting Notes [see NEWS FLASHES].
Order arose from the chaos as we discussed many subjects
specific to Linux and Linux related topics. At times,
three or four discussions were taking place at once.
Lots of Linux information was exchanged in this process.

CONNECTIVITY & BANDWIDTH...
The network hub was hosting 4-5 laptops and an install.
The 802.11b wireless network was available but not used.

INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDING...
There was a flurry of activity regarding the Chamber/KLUG
DHCP server that required a tweak in the configuration.
The team reported a successful troubleshooting outcome.

Dirk was busy with the configuration of a Linux Terminal
Server Project [LTSP] server and client. He is building
a power server to drive some lower end PC's. The network
will boost their functionality reliably at a low cost.
LTSP is a great configuration option in many situations.
Looked like the majority of this project was completed.

AND THE INSTALLS...
Greg was having problems with hardware as Linux was being
installed on his Gateway G6-200 PC that he was dedicating
to being a firewall box. The CD-ROM would not read a disc,
looked like a drive cleaning was required. Finally he was
attempting a network install. Greg's other machine was a
muscle workstation that was co-existing with M$ XP-Corp Pro.
The PC would run fine for several days and then just lock up.
He was running Mandrake v8.2 and the error log said it was
crashing X-windows. He was getting debug assistance from
several KLUG'ites with this problem. This is the same PC
that Adam Williams tenaciously helped to configure for use
with a USB Apple Pro Keyboard w/ 15 function keys.

Lots of side conversations were going on during the fun.
Multi-threaded, concurrent processing exchange was apparent.
The meeting easily carried on past the 3 hour mark...

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk Bartley, a WMU graduate, works as a systems
administrator for Schupan Aluminum Sales, a division
of Schupan and Sons. His passion for free software
comes second to spending time with his wife Dawn, an
Upper Peninsula native, and taking Shelly, their
sheltie/terrier mix pound pooch, for a walk. These
interests are only followed by his love of playing
ice hockey.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 07/09/2002 Xcessive XML Month!

course of his professional and volunteer activities.
He can also be seen cycling the Kal-Haven trail,
wandering around, perpetrating nature photgraphy or
traveling to some fairly unusual places. Recently,
he was elected to chair a major a SIG of the ACM.

Stop in and see this "pay-to-compute" implementation.
Check out - http://www.boogies.com/ Site by Matt Crampton!
This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogies is being
supplemented by volunteers. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. Various upgrades and enhancements are
being applied currently, including three new workstations and
other hardware upgrades. Contact "Robert G. Brown" <bob@acm.org>
to help out or for more info. Get on the Boogies Volunteer
mailing list and start learning and contributing today!

The big yellow KLUG banner was again proudly displayed on
May 11, 2002 at the ALSCS COMPUTER SHOW in KALAMAZOO, MI!
This show is again held at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.
Again, lots of Linux CD-ROM's were made available to the public
