Can you log in from the command line?

What bootloader are you using? With LILO, you can hit CTRL-X at the LILO
prompt and enter "linux 3" to boot to the command line. With GRUB I think
you have to hit e to edit the line or something...
Or, you can hit CTRL-ALT-F1 at boot to get to a command prompt login.

Login as root and enter "Xconfigurator"

See if you can reconfigure X that way.
